It's not that being paranoid suddenly bumps your IQ up 20 points or anything like that. However, most people who are paranoid start researching the thing(s) they are paranoid of, and inevitably come across one or two things in that process they hadn't known before, thus increasing their knowledge -- and in American society, the abstract, capital letter concepts of Knowledge and Intelligence are functionally interchangable.

Hence it becomes a cycle -- your paranoia leads you to research things, your research leads you to things you didn't know before, which leads you to more things to be paranoid about, which leads you to do further research...
